Diablo V
Diablo 5 Gameplay: World, Builds and Endgame
Diablo V (Diablo 5) is built around a procedural world that changes whenever you return, builds that matter more than fast reflexes, and a complete endgame at launch (as of October 19, 2026). Blizzard has not announced a skill tree, seasons, a battle pass or a shop.
Confirmed and open
Procedural world and terror-forming
Diablo V builds both the overworld and its dungeons procedurally. According to Blizzard, terrain, points of interest, monsters and rewards can change when you return to an area. Senior game director Joe Shely goes further: even the map tiles themselves can differ from one adventure to the next, so a ruined church may look different depending on the state of the region.
Diablo’s Dread Commanders drive these changes. Wherever one rules, they reshape the land into their own version of Hell – the team calls it terror-forming. Narrative director Jennifer Hepler describes an area under the Dread Commander of Undeath, full of zombies, that you may later find reclaimed by humanity or held by a different commander. There are no fixed towns in this world; you travel with your caravan instead.

Three stories in one world
According to Shely, Diablo V tells three stories at once: the past, the present as the desolation of Diablo’s takeover, and the future as the terror-forming of Sanctuary. Blizzard’s panel article describes the same layers: ruins show what was lost, corruption reveals Diablo’s rule, and the encroaching forces of Hell hint at what comes next.
The environment is part of the story, not just a backdrop. How much the three layers differ in play has not been shown.

Builds over reflexes
On September 29, 2026, Shely outlined the direction of combat on X: Diablo V keeps some mechanics that demand moment-to-moment execution, but on balance it will be “an INT/STR game (planning and investment).” Any challenge should be beatable with the right build. That does not make combat slow: executive producer Matt Zitterman wants it to feel “even more visceral, even more action-forward.”
How builds come together is still open. A skill tree, a Paragon system and class mechanics have not been announced, and no skills have been shown for the three classes. What is known: on the items side, sets and runewords return and stat requirements are being tested.

Endgame and level scaling
For Shely, a complete endgame at launch is one of the pillars of Diablo V. To keep the campaign from feeling overloaded, the team deliberately defers complexity: deeper systems and parts of the itemization only kick in during the endgame. Players who enjoy the campaign should not be overwhelmed, while those looking for mastery find it later. Specific endgame activities have not been shown.
For level scaling, the team plans to “take a somewhat different approach” than in Diablo IV. Shely’s reasoning: when monsters automatically grow with you, the feeling of getting stronger can get lost. How the new system works has not been announced.

Overlay map, loot filters and controllers
Diablo 5 carries some quality-of-life features over from Diablo IV. “Diablo V will ship with an overlay map at launch,” Shely said in the BlizzCon group interview. In a later interview he named loot filters alongside the overlay map as features coming over from Diablo IV.
Controllers get a first promise too: because large items take up several squares in the grid inventory again, the team says it has solutions for controller players. That is not a platform announcement – see platforms for the current status.

What the developers say
“While Diablo V will continue to feature some DEX (moment-to-moment execution) mechanics, on balance the game will be an INT/STR game (planning and investment). We are designing to the core tenet of ARPGs that any challenge can be overcome with the right build.”
“By deferring some of the complexity of the systems and itemization later into the endgame, we can deliver the depth and mastery elements that our players who love the endgame enjoy without overwhelming our players who are enjoying spending a lot of time in the campaign and exploring the world.”
“So each time you go somewhere, it’s a whole new experience and just constant new discoveries.”
