Diablo V

Diablo 5 Developers: Who Is Making Diablo V?

Diablo V (Diablo 5) is being made at Blizzard Entertainment under senior game director Joe Shely, with narrative director Jennifer Hepler in charge of the story. The team works separately from the Diablo IV team on its own branch of the Diablo IV technology and says it is in full production (as of October 19, 2026).

The team behind Diablo V

Roles as introduced at the panel and in interviews.

A separate team alongside Diablo IV

Diablo V is not a side project of the Diablo IV team. “We have dedicated teams for each of those games,” Tiffany Wat told IGN, adding that the two teams still work closely together. In the same interview Joe Shely stressed that Diablo IV remains fully supported. According to Diablo IV game director Brent Gibson, seasons continue as long as the community keeps showing up; Gibson leads Diablo IV, not Diablo V.

The team has plenty of experience. The panel noted that people on the Diablo V team have worked on Diablo games for more than a decade, some for decades. Wat and Mueller already shared the stage at the Diablo IV reveal. Why Diablo V became a game of its own ties into its story about Diablo.

Engine: a branch of the Diablo IV technology

Blizzard has not named the engine. What is clear is what Diablo V builds on: the Diablo IV technology, which the team branched off and has been adapting ever since. As the team put it to Windows Central: “We’ve had our own branch now for Diablo 5, for a while now.” The aim is to tailor the technology to the new game and leave technical debt behind. According to John Mueller, the team branched off more than a year before the reveal, starting from the technology Lord of Hatred shipped with.

The biggest new piece is the procedural world. Mueller calls it the third generation of the dungeon technology, which now builds the overworld too. The gameplay page explains what that means in play. Claims about a switch to an outside engine are unsupported.

Development status: early or in full production?

Two statements seem to clash. Blizzard’s official panel article says Diablo V is “early in development.” Joe Shely, on the other hand, told IGN on September 13, 2026: “We’re in full production,” and Tiffany Wat confirmed this to Kotaku.

Both can be true. “Full production” is the phase after concept and prototyping, when content is built at scale. “Early” describes the distance to the spring 2029 release, about two and a half years away. Matt Zitterman says the date comes from “clarity of creative vision and clarity of production schedule.” More on the release date page.

Apart from the teaser, only concept art and an inventory screen marked as not final have been shown so far. The team wants to test Diablo V with players early, but no public beta has been announced.

First shoot for the cinematics

On October 14, 2026, cinematic director Neil David Carter posted a photo from an empty studio on X with the words “First shoot #Diablo5.” It shows cameras on tripods, monitors and a lighting truss of the kind used for motion capture. Carter did not say what was filmed.

The post comes from his personal account and is not an official announcement. It announces no new trailer and does not change the release window.
