Diablo V
Diablo 5 vs Diablo 4: Every Known Difference
Diablo V (Diablo 5) differs clearly from Diablo IV: a caravan replaces towns, a procedural world replaces a fixed one, and items follow the Diablo II model with a grid inventory, a belt slot and runewords (as of October 19, 2026). Much else, such as platforms, has not been announced.

What Diablo V takes from Diablo II
The Diablo II legacy shows most clearly in the items: a grid inventory with multi-slot items, a belt slot, item tiers, stat requirements in testing, and runes and runewords. Senior game director Joe Shely explicitly names the “crunchiness” of Diablo II as a model.
The caravan has roots in Diablo II as well: the team names the Rogue Encampment and its campfire as an inspiration. And like Diablo II, Diablo 5 uses areas that do not look the same every time – according to art director John Mueller, with the third generation of the team’s procedural tech.

What stays from Diablo IV
On the technical side, Diablo V builds on Diablo IV; the team says it has been working on its own, customized branch of that technology for a while. The overlay map, promised for launch, and loot filters carry over. As in Diablo IV, you play solo or in a group, and all content should be playable with friends.
For crafting, Diablo V follows the approach of the Lord of Hatred expansion. Mueller also promises everything the open world of Diablo IV offered, just in a dynamic way. Diablo IV itself continues: its team plans seasons for as long as the community keeps playing.

What is brand new
Three things are new to the series. First, the game begins after Diablo has won: you flee through a fallen Sanctuary as the Heir to Westmarch. Second, there are no towns; your caravan of survivors is your vendors, your crafters and the source of all side quests at once. Third, Diablo’s Dread Commanders reshape the world through terror-forming, so areas can look different when you return.
On top of that comes the Plague Knight as a brand-new class. You also choose character and class more independently than in any Diablo before.

What is still open
Many things that define Diablo IV have not been announced for Diablo V (as of October 19, 2026): platforms, a skill tree, a Paragon system, seasons, a battle pass, an in-game shop, trading, crossplay and an offline mode. How much of the world you share with other players is also open. On level scaling, the only certainty is that the team wants a different approach than in Diablo IV.
