Diablo 5 Caravan Explained: Why There Are No Towns

Diablo V (Diablo 5) has no towns left, because Diablo destroyed them. Your base is a caravan of wagons and survivors that travels with you, grows with every new member and provides your vendors, craftspeople and every side quest (as of October 19, 2026).

Why there are no towns

In earlier games you moved from town to town, and a blacksmith was always conveniently waiting. Diablo 5 drops that: Sanctuary belongs to Diablo, the towns are destroyed and hardly anyone survived. Blizzard titles its caravan section “The Road is your Home”: survival no longer depends on towns or conquered strongholds, but on allies who cross the wasteland with you.

Executive producer Matt Zitterman explained the idea at the panel: in a world with no safe place, you are the point of safety, and you and your followers are the last light in the darkness.

The team names the Rogue Encampment from Diablo II as its model. That camp stayed in one place, but it set the tone: people carving out a safe corner amid the horror, with the campfire as a sign of hope. The story page explains how the caravan fits the plot.

How the caravan grows

The caravan is made up of wagons and followers. It starts small and grows with every survivor you meet, who then becomes a vendor, craftsperson or companion. Senior production director Tiffany Wat gave GameSpot an example: if a jeweler joins, they bring their wagon; if a blacksmith joins, the circle of wagons grows. At the panel she joked that the blacksmith is “Bob Prime,” since there is only one left – a working title, she added.

According to narrative director Jennifer Hepler, each wagon reflects its owner’s personality and background and gets upgraded as the story goes on, while trophies from your victories appear at camp.

The caravan is also part of your progression: you start with little and grow into a powerful force. “You’ve got to bring the caravan with you, and there are mechanics tied to that,” Joe Shely told MMORPG.com. The team plans to show those mechanics closer to launch. The confirmed systems are on the gameplay page.

The known companions

Blizzard has named two caravan members so far: a former Sister of the Sightless Eye, the order you know from Diablo II, and a stranded Treasure Goblin. There are no further details on the Sister yet.

Tiffany Wat said more about the goblin at the panel. Usually you chase treasure goblins across the map; this time you get to know one: a demon driven by treasure, looking for meaning in a world where greed has lost its purpose. During the campaign you learn why he joins you and what role he plays against Diablo. Wat also gave his name, which Windows Central spells “Zarg.” There is no official spelling yet, and Wat noted the name may not be final.

The companions are not party members you gear up. Hepler told Polygon that you will not level up their skills or hand them clothing as in Dragon Age; they are personalities with stories of their own.

Side quests come only from the caravan

Because there are no ordinary civilians left, nobody waits by the roadside to ask you for a favor. All side content comes from the members of your caravan. Each quest is part of the personal story of a companion you chose to take in. Hepler sums it up: every side quest matters because it matters to someone who matters to you.

That gives the caravan a storytelling job as well. It shows the fallout of Diablo’s conquest from many angles and gives you something to lose. If players are supposed to fear the Lord of Terror, Hepler argues, they need more at stake than the next fight.
