More classes than ever before

“Diablo V is going to launch with more classes than ever before. And I don’t just mean more classes than another Diablo game at ship. I mean more classes total.”

“These are only the first of the classes we’ll reveal on the road to Diablo V”

Numbers like “nine or ten classes” are press estimates, not figures from Blizzard.

Character and class are separate choices

In Diablo V you always play the Heir to Westmarch – but you decide who that heir is separately from your class. Joe Shely told Esquire: “The idea of who you are as a person and what class you’re playing are independent in a way they’ve never been before.” Your character’s look and background are no longer tied to a class.

Narrative director Jennifer Hepler put it even more simply: “The Heir to Westmarch in your world is whatever gender and class you pick.” Blizzard has not shown character creation yet. More on the protagonist is on the story page.

Two returning classes, one newcomer

You know the Demon Hunter and the Monk from Diablo III, released in 2012. Art director John Mueller calls both “really established fantasies” that should get their best version with today’s technology. For the Demon Hunter, Shely promises something familiar in a new form: “It’s a new representation of the class.” The twin crossbows stay.

The Plague Knight has no predecessor in the series. Having so many classes is what makes room for new ideas, Shely says: “It also affords us the opportunity to explore new classes like the Plague Knight.” According to PlayDay, the team also placed its classes on a scale from dark to light – the Plague Knight as a dark class, the Monk as a light one.

Skills and skill trees: still open

Blizzard has not shown skills, resources, class mechanics or a skill tree for any of the three classes (as of October 19, 2026). Weapons beyond the Demon Hunter’s crossbows and the Monk’s fists are not confirmed either. Blizzard says more on combat, progression and build options will follow; regular developer updates are planned from 2027.

There is a direction, though: according to Joe Shely, Diablo V is meant to be a game of planning, where the right build can overcome any challenge. What that means is covered on the gameplay page.
