The Fable of the Tortoise and the Fox, part 1

The Fox was growing hungry. Most of the creatures in the forest were aware of his nature, so no matter how cunning he was in trying to trick them into becoming his next meal, they saw through the charade and avoided his traps. Now, he could feel his stomach tying into knots, demanding its due with a loud growling. He was getting desperate. And then – a miracle. For he saw the Tortoise slowly ambling through the forest. Their paths had never crossed before. What’s more, the Tortoise was known for his lonely ways, so there was a high chance that no other creature had warned him against the Fox. The Fox grinned and said to himself: ‘Today I shall feast!’ Little did he know that the Tortoise, though slow and clumsy in his gait, would prove a formidable enemy.

The Fable of the Tortoise and the Fox, part 2

The Fox was waiting for the Tortoise to pass him. ‘Hey, aren’t you the Tortoise I’ve heard so much about?’, he asked amiably. The Tortoise looked at the stranger and said in a slow, deliberate manner: ‘I am he, yes. Can I help you?’ The Tortoise, despite being a loner, was always willing to help others, you see. Even strangers met in the forest, whose smile didn't quite reach their eyes. The Fox said: ‘Oh, I wouldn’t presume to bother you… but yes, if you’re so kind. Please, follow me.’ And so together they walked deeper into the forest. Of course the Tortoise, being a tortoise, would move at his own, very slow pace. This unnerved the Fox, who felt that his hunger could wait no longer. When he decided they were far enough from any prying eyes, he pounced at the Tortoise. ‘His shell won’t protect him for long,’ he thought to himself, ‘against an opponent as nimble as myself!’ Ah, but he was gravely mistaken.

The Fable of the Tortoise and the Fox, part 3

Sensing that the Fox had ill intentions towards him, as soon as he saw the knave turning around, the Tortoise immediately hid in his shell. The Fox broke one of its fangs on the thick carapace. ‘Damn you!’, he growled in pain. ‘You think your shell will stop me? Just wait, you fool!’ The Fox tried and tried to break the Tortoise’s shell, jumping this way and that, but to no avail. Finally, dead tired, he gave up and lay down next to the hidden Tortoise, breathing heavily. And at this moment, the Tortoise suddenly emerged from his shell and quickly snapped at the Fox, biting his neck. That was the end of the cunning Fox and his tricks. And so, oh valiant knight, you should be like the Tortoise. Don heavy armour and let your enemies dance around you, trying to penetrate your protection. Be patient. And when they grow tired, strike them down.
