Be Your Own Healer, part 1

We’ve been told that in order to return to good health, we need help from medicine men and their very expensive remedies made of rare ingredients. Let me assure you that this is simply not true. Do not assume that I aim to disparage the good doctors, though – no, they do have knowledge and can be of great help when a serious malady strikes. But when it comes to everyday ailments, everyone can take care of their own health. It just requires some preparation.

Be Your Own Healer, part 2

Let us begin with something simple: what to do when you feel pain in some place on your body. To cure a headache, you need to mix red nettles with vinegar and the white of an egg. Apply such an ointment until the pain subsides. For a painful stomach you can brew a tincture from bishopswort – it will steady the juices inside you and help with digestion. Chewing willow bark is an all-round pain reliever. Hemlock also has quite a variety of uses – it may help with bad sleep and pain. But be careful with this one – use too much and you will never wake up.

Be Your Own Healer, part 3

Now let us move on to something more serious: open wounds. They are not easily treated, especially when they are your own, but there are things you can do to make things better – and without a need for too many ingredients. First, use red wine or vinegar to clean the wound. Then seal the wound with egg whites or honey. You will find that the burning sensation will soon go away and in a matter of days your wound will start to heal over. As you can see, if one makes sure to have a few ingredients at hand, they can treat most everyday ailments. There’s no need to cough up your hard-earned coin on a visit to the medicus. Be smart and remain in good health!
