On Focus and Fatigue, part 1

What are the most common causes of death on the battlefield? Fatigue and lack of focus. If you survive the first charge, the skirmish quickly turns into a war of attrition – especially when everyone is well-armoured. You exchange blows, try to find an opening. And then – you make a mistake. Or move your arm too slowly, which gives the opponent a chance to finally hit you where it hurts. This is why you must learn to conserve your energy. And how to draw from it when the opportunity to strike rises.

On Focus and Fatigue, part 2

A wise warrior knows that when fatigue starts to become a problem, it’s time to withdraw, let the enemy take the initiative – or at least make them believe so. Let them attack, waste their energy on trying to bypass your defence. This is one of the reasons why learning to properly parry and avoid attacks is so crucial – it’s all about buying yourself some breathing space. It’s about pushing fatigue away for as long as possible and refocusing your combat efforts.

On Focus and Fatigue, part 3

Once you've allowed them to push you into a defensive stance for a longer while, it’s time to go on the offensive, albeit cautiously. Throw a few short, guarded cuts, just to make the opponent think you’re trying your utmost to retaliate but simply can’t best them. Be engaged but don’t show all your cards. Take your time to think of a proper strategy. And when you finally get your second wind, really get back into the fight. Hit your enemy with everything you've got, overwhelming them with well-aimed, precise strikes.
