The Arms of the Doge, part 1

“Olaf of Dubrovnik was a Dane mercenary who somehow found himself in Dalmatia and decided to earn his fame by serving the interests of the Republic of Venice in these lands. The locals called him ‘The Arms of the Doge’ – both because he represented the Venetian Duke, but also due to Olaf having extraordinarily long arms, which he used to his advantage when wielding a sword.”

The Arms of the Doge, part 2

“Olaf was not someone to be trifled with. A story told in Dubrovnik said that during one particular skirmish, the Dane cut down three men with one mighty swing. Having witnessed this unbelievable feat, the rest of his opponents decided to flee from the field of battle. Ever since then, Olaf boasted that those who meet him on the battlefield lose either their heads, or their hearts.”

The Arms of the Doge, part 3

“He was not a warrior of great finesse, but Olaf got the job done. Once, he protected a visiting Venetian noble from an enraged crowd of paupers simply by stuffing the rich man in an outhouse and guarding the door. No one dared approach, knowing the far reach of Olaf’s arms. He was able to stand his ground until the noble’s retinue arrived and dispersed the crowd.”

The Arms of the Doge, part 4

“Olaf of Dubrovnik lost his life in a skirmish against a roaming band of Frankish mercenaries who, not under any official contract at the time, tried to pillage Dubrovnik on several occasions. The large Dane stopped them with just a handful of warriors at his side, but died due to sustained injuries. According to one of his brothers-in-arms, Olaf’s final words uttered towards the enemy just before the fighting began were: ‘Approach in pairs, bastards, I’m in a hurry.’”
