The Witcher IV

The Witcher 4 and the New Saga: The Next Witcher Trilogy

The Witcher 4 is the first game of a new trilogy: according to CD PROJEKT RED, all three games are meant to come out within six years of The Witcher 4’s launch – one game every three years on average. Several other Witcher projects run alongside it but are not part of the trilogy (as of October 30, 2026).

A trilogy with Ciri at its heart

The very first announcement on March 21, 2022, already spoke of a “new saga.” CD PROJEKT RED showed what that meant in its strategy update on October 4, 2022: the project codenamed Polaris was a story-driven open-world RPG built on the legacy of The Witcher 3, and the beginning of a new Witcher trilogy. A day later, then-CEO Adam Kiciński spoke of Polaris and two additional installments in the new saga.

At the reveal in December 2024, the studio called The Witcher IV “the first game in the new Witcher saga,” with Ciri stepping into the role of protagonist. Game director Sebastian Kalemba said the team wanted to explore what it means to truly become a witcher by following Ciri on her Path. CD PROJEKT RED has not explicitly said whether Ciri remains the protagonist in all three games, but the saga is built around her.

There are no titles or codenames for parts 5 and 6. All that is known is the schedule – and that there is little room for Witcher 3-style expansions in between.

The six-year plan: one game every three years

The 2022 slide said all three games were aimed to be delivered within a six-year period following the Polaris release. The studio is sticking to that goal. In March 2025 Michał Nowakowski said the company saw nothing that would make it impossible. In November 2025 he reaffirmed that the plan was still to launch the whole trilogy within six years – with shorter development times between The Witcher 4 and 5 and between 5 and 6.

On September 3, 2026, CFO Piotr Nielubowicz clarified the reading: the new trilogy is meant to come out within six years of The Witcher 4’s release, “which means one game every 3 years, on average.” So the six years start with The Witcher 4’s launch.

Our own calculation, not a statement from CD PROJEKT RED: if The Witcher 4 launches in 2028 as planned, the plan would put The Witcher 5 around 2031 and The Witcher 6 around 2034. Claims of a two-year cycle are therefore wrong. The studio has not explained in detail how the shorter gaps will be achieved. The obvious reading is that the engine, tools and world will be in place after the first game, with no big switch like the move from REDengine to Unreal Engine 5 – again, that is our assessment.

Expansions? Probably not

The Witcher 3 got two big expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, and a third, Songs of the Past, follows in 2027. For the new trilogy that will be hard. In May 2026 Nowakowski said it would be difficult for the studio to add an expansion to the upcoming trilogy. With one game every three years, there is little time for it.

It has not been explicitly ruled out, but nothing has been announced either. What this means for price and editions is covered under price and pre-order.

The Witcher 3 Remastered and Songs of the Past

Until The Witcher 4 launches, CD PROJEKT RED aims to release one big Witcher title every year. First up was The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered, announced at gamescom Opening Night Live on August 25, 2026, and released on September 29, 2026, for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, natively on Switch 2 and for the first time on Battle.net. The remaster, including Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, is free for owners of the game. Everything about it is in our Witcher 3 database with a world map and planner.

Songs of the Past follows in 2027: the third paid expansion, developed with Fool’s Theory. It takes Geralt to Letten, Dandelion’s home, and gives him a new weapon, a chain – the same kind of weapon Ciri wields in The Witcher 4 trailer. In May 2026 Nowakowski called the expansion a prologue to The Witcher 4, “not in a verbatim way.” The half-year press release puts it this way: eleven years after his last adventure, Geralt will hit the trail one more time – before Ciri takes over as the main protagonist in The Witcher 4.

The Witcher 1 remake

The remake of the first Witcher game is being made by Fool’s Theory on Unreal Engine 5 and uses the same tools as The Witcher 4. That closeness has consequences: since March 2025, development of the remake has been temporarily integrated with work on The Witcher 4, and a small part of the Fool’s Theory team helps directly on The Witcher 4.

In September 2026 Nowakowski said the remake needed more time because of “certain technology dependencies with The Witcher 4.” There is no date. A release year for the remake that occasionally appears online comes from analysts, not from the studio.

Sirius, Cyberpunk 2 and Hadar

Project Sirius is a separate Witcher game with a multiplayer focus, originally from the Boston studio The Molasses Flood, which was merged into CD PROJEKT RED in 2025. In August 2026 the studio shrank the team from 83 to about 65 people; nine positions were cut and nine people moved internally. The Witcher 4 was not affected. Sirius remains in pre-production. So if you are looking for multiplayer in the Witcher universe: that is Sirius, not The Witcher 4.

The other two big projects are not Witcher games. Cyberpunk 2, formerly Orion, is in pre-production with 184 developers and is mainly being developed in Boston. Hadar is a new IP in the concept phase with over 30 people. RaidDex has its own Cyberpunk 2077 section.

The Netflix series and Sapkowski’s books

The series and the books are only loosely connected to CD PROJEKT RED’s games. Season 4 of Netflix’s “The Witcher,” with Liam Hemsworth as Geralt, premiered on October 30, 2025; season 5 is set to be the last. Andrzej Sapkowski published a new novel about the young Geralt, “Crossroads of Ravens,” in Polish in November 2024 and in English in September 2025, and is working on another book.

Sapkowski is not involved in The Witcher 4. The game’s story is written by the CD PROJEKT RED team; how it connects to Witcher 3 and the books is covered under timeline and Witcher 3 ending.
