Only a few characters in The Witcher 4 are confirmed so far: Ciri as the protagonist, Geralt in a secret role, Ciri’s mare Kelpie and, from the reveal trailer, the Bauk monster and the girl Mioni from the village of Stromford. Other familiar faces such as Yennefer, Triss or Dandelion have not been announced by CD PROJEKT RED (as of October 30, 2026).

Cirilla, known as Ciri, is the protagonist of The Witcher 4 and, for the first time, a full witcher. CD PROJEKT RED calls her a “professional monster slayer”, and the game sets out to show what it means to become a witcher. She is faster and more agile than Geralt, fights with a sword, a chain and magic, and has cat’s eyes. Her English voice is new: Ciara Berkeley instead of Jo Wyatt.
Everything else – why the studio chose her, how she plays and where her powers stand – is on her own page: Ciri.

Geralt is in The Witcher 4. In December 2024 CD PROJEKT RED told IGN: “Geralt will appear in the game, but we don’t want to spoil his role precisely. You’ll have to wait to learn more for now.” The studio has not said more since. Whether he is playable has not been announced.
CD PROJEKT RED also confirmed to IGN that the voice at the end of the reveal trailer belongs to Doug Cockle, Geralt’s English voice in all three games. At the end of August 2026, Narrative Director Philipp Weber wrote on X that Geralt will “always have an important role.” Back in December 2024, Weber had said that choosing Ciri lets the studio honour Geralt’s ending in Witcher 3 and Blood and Wine.
Doug Cockle said in August 2024, before the reveal: “We know that Geralt will be part of the game, we just don’t know how much.” He later said CD PROJEKT RED told him off for saying so. At the end of October 2026, VGTimes reported that Cockle has not yet been invited to record and does not know Geralt’s role. That is only a paraphrase and is unconfirmed.
Geralt’s next big outing is Songs of the Past, the Witcher 3 expansion due in 2027. CD PROJEKT RED calls it a prologue: Geralt hits the trail one more time “before Ciri takes over as the main protagonist in The Witcher 4.” More under story.

Kelpie is Ciri’s horse. In the Unreal Engine 5 tech demo of June 3, 2025, Ciri rides her through the mountains and forests of Kovir to the port town of Valdrest; CD PROJEKT RED’s press release explicitly names “her horse Kelpie.” On June 21, 2025, the mare even got her own short video on the official channel (“Meet Kelpie”).
On the tech side, Kelpie is a showpiece: according to Sebastian Kalemba, the ML Deformer makes her muscles move and flex realistically. In the AnsweRED podcast on animation, the team also said the horse was recorded with motion capture. How riding works in the game has not been shown, though – the tech demo was not gameplay.
The name is not new: in Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels, Ciri’s black mare is also called Kelpie. That is general knowledge from the books, not a CD PROJEKT RED statement about The Witcher 4. Geralt’s horse Roach has not been announced for the game.

The Bauk is the monster from the Cinematic Reveal Trailer. According to the official press release, it has terrorised a remote village for generations and demands a ritual human sacrifice. Game Director Sebastian Kalemba named it in the official trailer breakdown; the village is called Stromford and lies in the north.
Ciri takes the contract to kill the beast and save the girl meant to be sacrificed to it at the same time. In the trailer she fights the Bauk with her sword, a burning chain and magic. Kalemba says what we see is an actual quest in the game. How the encounter plays is unknown, since the trailer is pre-rendered.
The name comes from folklore: in South Slavic tradition, the bauk is a bogeyman lurking in the dark. That is our addition, not a CD PROJEKT RED statement. The real twist of the trailer is classic Witcher: Ciri learns “that monsters come in all forms.” How the scene works as a story is covered under story.

Mioni is the young girl from Stromford whom the villagers intend to sacrifice to the Bauk. The trailer opens with her father’s farewell: “Dearest daughter… I’ve watched ye grow…” Ciri steps in because she wants to kill the monster and save Mioni – and finds herself at odds with the prejudice and superstition of the very people she is trying to protect.
For the game, Mioni is a first hint at choices with consequences. In the official breakdown, Sebastian Kalemba says in essence that there are choices and consequences and a way to save her. We take the name from that breakdown, as reported by GamingBolt. How Mioni’s story can end in the game is not known.

The reveal trailer has a German audio track, but CD PROJEKT RED has not named any German voice actors. Whether Matthias Haase, Geralt’s German voice in Witcher 3, returns is unconfirmed (as of October 30, 2026).
Apart from Ciri and Geralt, CD PROJEKT RED has not announced any familiar character from the earlier games for The Witcher 4. That goes for Yennefer, Triss, Vesemir, Dandelion, Zoltan and everyone else. The only lead is John Schwab, Dandelion’s English voice actor, who said in a September 2026 interview that he recorded lines for the game. The studio has not confirmed this, so we list it as unconfirmed.
Dandelion does have a part in Songs of the Past: the Witcher 3 expansion heads to Letten, his homeland, in 2027. That is Witcher 3, though, not Witcher 4. We add new names here as soon as CD PROJEKT RED announces them; rumours are collected under rumours.
