Carefully Folded Letter

To Rosie, my light

My lady, it was only after receiving your letter that I finally understood why I survived that hellish battlefield. Please do not trouble yourself trying to persuade your father for my sake. I cannot bear to see your heart shattered against those castle walls.

If you have truly chosen me over your father, then I too will stake this lowly life to free you from this prison. On the deepest night, once the guards have withdrawn, wait for me at the cliff where we first confessed our love.

Even if the world deems us sinners, even if your father sends his soldiers to hunt us down, I will never let go of your hand—even if it means leaping from the cliff with you.

I shall become your shadow and follow you wherever you go.

Let us meet again at our promised place.

At dawn, I, your humble guard Barnard, will come for you.
