Listen, didn't want to ruin the surprise but here I go anyway – for the greater good!
The whole team is planning a party for your discharge from the hospital and were asking my advice on gifts. Rather than some tacky surprise, I figured you'd want something actually useful. Am I right?

But if they really want to go above and beyond... then I suppose I'm need of a new jumpsuit for work – like a neoderm or some such.
Give everyone my hugs and kisses for me! And not to ruin a little surprise for you, but once they let me out of this damn hospital bed, you won't be able to walk for a week ;)
