The official beginning of the New United States of America is marked by the ratification of the country's constitution, which took place on July 4, 2053. It was then that Elisabeth Kress, having ruled the country for 35 years, handed over power to an interim government in preparation for elections. Rosalind Myers was the third person in the presidential seat and also the second woman to hold the post. She began her first term in office by presenting a unification program to fulfill the age-old ambition of the federalist NUSA government - to reunite all the states. The separatist territories were, of course, reluctant to return under the star-spangled banner, which led to the outbreak of the Unification War in 2069. The conflict ended with the signing of the Treaty of Unification, which guaranteed that the Free States would retain their autonomy on the condition that they join the new federal government.
The center of NUSA power resides in the megacities to the northeast of the country, referred to collectively as the Plex and covering areas from Boston in the north to Washington in the south. President Rosalind Myers' third - which doesn't mean last - term in office is now coming to an end. Although the country's official political system remains a democracy, the continued dominance of one party (the Federalist Party) since the 2050s and strict national security restrictions make NUSA more like an authoritarian-run police state in reality.
